During the Month of July, West 29th Merchants will be collecting gently used or new children's books.
All books donated will be given to Reach Out & Read Colorado.
Reach Out & Read Colorado gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Reach Out & Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to prescribe books to children at wellness checkups from 6 months to 5 years of age, with special focus on children growing up in poverty.
Gently used books are placed in waiting areas at Reach Out & Read Colorado clinics to create a literacy-rich environment as well as given to siblings accompanying any child at a well-child visit.
WHY?: TO PLACE BOOKS IN THE HANDS OF CHILDREN WHO OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT HAVE ONE.
Did you know that 61% of low-income families have no age-appropriate books in their homes?
Fewer than half of young children in the U.S. are read to daily.
Children from middle-income homes have on average 13 books per child. There is only 1 book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods.
The average child growing up in a middle-class family has been exposed to 1,000 to 1,700 hours of one-on-one picture book reading. Where the average low-income child has only been exposed to 25 hours of one-on-one reading.
